The door opened to blackness. Pushing forward, the cart’s wheels wouldn’t go over the gap. I let Shasta and Mr. McClusky out so I could pull the cart up. The door tried to close on my arm, and when the sensor was triggered, the door shook violently before retreating. I got the cart out with a yank, glad to be free of that infernal thing.
Mr. McClusky’s flashlight was back on the paintings. We watched the opposite sequence of what we’d seen before.
“I love your paintings, Sam,” Shasta said. “I want to see them all.”
“Thank you, Dear,” he said. “Perhaps I can give you a tour sometime later.”
We reached the T-junction where the dolphin had the sombrero in its teeth. Going down that corridor would leave you with that series of paintings on your right. Mr. McClusky moved his flashlight to the left wall of that corridor. It was a coral reef animated with colorful fish. Within the scene, a sea horse was looking questionably at a beach ball floating above it. And in the distance, a small island with palm trees poked out of the ocean.
Mr. McClusky loaded me up with a roll of the black paper and two rolls of duct tape. “You do the office windows. We’ll do the windows in the maze.”
“How can I see without the flashlight?” I asked.
“Just follow your nose, Mr. Jacobs. The exit’s ten feet thataway.” He began to push the cart, with Shasta at his side. “When you’re outa the maze, you’ll see well enough in the computer light.”
In a few steps, the office glowed ahead of me. When I exited the labyrinth, there was an echo reverberating toward me—it was the sound of Shasta laughing hysterically. When I turned to look back into the labyrinth, all that was there was darkness.
